As you may know Amtrak here is a joke! The embarassing fact of the matter is that flying for those of us in the US has become a necessity bourne of nuisiance. We all know that a bullet train network that is safe and reasonably priced and dependable should be up and running; we have none.But I will say you have some damn good air carriers in the UK--large and small!
